Hariprasad Chaurasia ( Hindi : हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया, Hariprasād Caurasiyā ; born July 1, 1938 in Allahabad , Uttar Pradesh ) is an Indian master of the bansuri flute . As a composer, he is responsible for several film scores and soundtracks.

Live and act

His father was a wrestler, his mother died when he was four years old. He started learning vocal music at the age of 15 from his neighbor Pt. Rajaram. Later he switched to the flute under the direction of Pt. Bholanath from Varanasi . Years later, while working for All India Radio , he received support from surbahar player Annapurna Devi , the daughter of sarod player Allauddin Khan .

In 1986 he recorded the album Making Music with Zakir Hussain , John McLaughlin and Jan Garbarek . The album, released under Zakir Hussain on ECM , has been described by critics as "one of the most inspired albums ever recorded with east-west fusion".

In 1997 he played as a guest musician with Shakti on the Remember Shakti Tour ; the live album Remember Shakti was released in 1999 by The Verve Music Group .

Chaurasia has been artistic director of the Department of North Indian classical music of the Conservatory of Rotterdam .

He has received several state awards, including a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1983), Padma Bhushan (1992), and Padma Vibhushan (2000). In 2014 he was awarded the Honorary Prize of the German Record Critics' Prize for his life's work .
