Harold West

Harold West aka Hal "Doc" West (* 12. August 1915 in Wolford , North Dakota ; † 4. May 1951 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American jazz - drummer of swing and bebop .

Harold "Doc" West played in the 1930s with Tiny Parham , Erskine Tate and from 1937 to 1938 with Roy Eldridge . He replaced Chick Webb in his band a few months before his death and worked with the first bebop musicians in Minton's Playhouse in the 1940s, in 1941 with Dizzy Gillespie and Don Byas . In 1944 he worked with Oscar Pettiford . In September of the same year he was a member of the Tiny Grimes quintet when they accompanied Charlie Parker on his first record session (the legendary Red Cross session) for the Savoy label. West has also been involved in recordings by Don Byas, Billie Holiday , Big Joe Turner , Slam Stewart , Erroll Garner , Wardell Gray , Jay McShann and other musicians.

  1. Besides the two takes of Red Cross , the session in New York produced several takes of Tiny's Tempo and two vocal numbers with Tiny Grimes as the singer. The Red Cross session is one of the birth hours of bebop.
