Harri Õunapuu

Harri Õunapuu (born February 2, 1947 in Sangaste ) is an Estonian politician.

Early years

Harri Õunapuu graduated from school in Tartu, South Estonia in 1961 . He studied at the Räpina Horticultural Technical Center until 1966 . In 1971 he graduated from the Estonian Agricultural Academy ( Eesti Põllumajanduse Akadeemia ) in Tartu in agricultural science .

1974/75 Õunapuu worked as an agronomist in the State Horticultural Administration of the Estonian SSR . From 1971 to 1974 and from 1975 to 1978 he worked as an agricultural expert in a state farm . From 1978 to 1981 he was the director of a state farm in Rapla before he was chairman of the Rapla Agricultural Collective from 1981 to 1989.

economy and politics

With the collapse of the Soviet regime and the forced economy in Estonia , Õunapuu went into the private sector. In 1992/93 he was a project manager at a foundation for the development of rural entrepreneurship before he was director of Bank Hoiupank from 1993 to 1996 . From 1996 to 1998, Õunapuu was director of the Eesti Kindlustus insurance company and then worked as an entrepreneur.

At the same time he began a political career with the re-establishment of democracy in Estonia. From 1989 to 1991 Õunapuu was the District Administrator of Rapla County . From 1996 to 2002 he was a member of Rapla City Council. From 1999 to 2002 he was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ).

From February 1991 to January 1992 Õunapuu was in the cabinet of Prime Minister Edgar Savisaar, Estonian Minister of Agriculture. From January 2001 to April 2003, Õunapuu held the post of finance minister in Prime Minister Siim Kallas' cabinet . Since 2003 he has been a member of parliament again.

Harri Õunapuu was a member of the CPSU during the Soviet occupation of Estonia from 1971 to 1990 . From 1994 to 2004 he belonged to the left-wing populist Estonian Center Party ( Eesti Keskerakond ). Since 2006 he has been a member of the liberal Estonian Reform Party ( Eesti Reformierakond ). Õunapuu is a member of the supervisory board of the Estonian central bank Eesti Pank .

Private life

Harri Õunapuu is married. He has two sons.
