Harry's Bar is a historic bar and restaurant on Via Veneto in Rome , Italy . She gained international fame when she was featured in La Dolce Vita , a film directed by Federico Fellini . Today it functions as a bar and restaurant and attracts an upscale Roman and international crowd. It has nothing to do with Harry's bars of the same name in Venice , Florence , Paris or London .

history

Harry's Bar Rome opened in 1918 under the name Golden Gate . The owner, an American who lived in Rome, found her inspiration for the restaurant name in her hometown of San Francisco , California . The Golden Gate is a strait of the sea that connects San Francisco Bay to the Pacific and separates Marin County from San Francisco.

The owner from Rome decided to open the bar as a tea room. In 1950 a new owner bought the property and decided to renovate the business and change its name from Golden Gate to Harry's Bar Rome. Harry's Bar had its most successful period during the "Dolce Vita" years (late 1950s to early 1960s). Rome experienced an economic boom. Cinecittà attracted American directors, producers and actors. Celebrities who have spent their time in this bar are Jean Paul Belmondo , Ava Gardner , Federico Fellini , Lana Turner , Marlon Brando , Alberto Sordi , Audrey Hepburn , Sophia Loren . During this time it was common to see Anita Ekberg sitting at the table after shopping on Via Frattina. The " paparazzi " huddled at the exit of Harrys Bar Rome to take celebrity photos. In the 80s Harry's Bar Rome was bought and renovated by the Cremonini group. In the early 2000s, Harry's Bar Rome was bought and renovated by the Lepore family. Today the bar creates the atmosphere of the Dolce Vita years. Many later celebrities visited Harry's Bar Rome, including Mel Gibson , Woody Allen , Katherine Kelly Lang , Romina Power , Carla Bruni , Antony Hopkins, and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton .
