Henry "Harry" Allen (born June 1879 in Spondon , † September 13, 1939 in Bulawayo ) was an English football player and sports official in Southern Rhodesia .

Career

Allen, who grew up as an orphan with his two brothers with relatives, played for Alvaston in the local Derby and District League and in April 1897 was part of a league selection team that played against the Derby County reserves. Allen, who worked for a law firm , came to Derby County in October 1898, his club mate Harry Oakden followed shortly afterwards, and made his First Division debut against Burnley FC a month later . In the FA Cup 1898/99 , the left winger scored against Woolwich Arsenal (6-0) and Wolverhampton Wanderers (2-1) each with a goal and thus contributed to reaching the finals. There, the team with the storm line Arkesden - Bloomer - Boag - MacDonald - Allen in front of 73,833 spectators at London's Crystal Palace, despite a 1-0 halftime lead with 1: 4 to league rivals Sheffield United .

Allen had already signed an extension of his professional contract for the following season in April 1899 , but he was only used at the season opener against Notts County , then Hugh McQueen , his predecessor on the left wing position, and John Cooke were given preference. In December 1899, he then joined the second division Leicester Fosse , where he ousted Rab King on the left wing for some time . At the end of the season he left Leicester again and subsequently played for his ex-club, which is now known as Alvaston & Boulton . In March 1901 he returned to Derby County as an amateur, but only came to the train for the reserve team.

In mid-1901 he went to Rhodesia at the invitation of Charles Wibberley , General Manager of Rhodesian Railways , and rose there to become Deputy General Manager. During World War I he served in South Africa as a captain in the 1st Rhodesia Regiment . Even as a sports official Allen was active, he was next to the post of Vice President of the Football Federation of Bulawayo also held the post of the President of the Rhodesian Amateurboxverbandes, was vice-president of the Rhodesian Cricket Union gives its name to a golf club in Bulawayo and was also at horse races and Bowls active . Allen died in Bulawayo in September 1939 after an appendix operation; his Scottish wife had died the year before during a visit to Great Britain. The couple had a son and a daughter.
