Harry Van Bergen, who sailed for the Cercle de la Voile de Paris and the Yacht Club de France , took part in the 1900 Olympic Games in Paris . With his yacht Formosa he started the regatta in the boat class over 20 tons , which consisted of four boats and was sailed over 40 nautical miles in just one race off Le Havre . The Formosa crossed the finish line as the third boat and kept this position even after adjusting the times, which was made due to the different weights of the participating boats.

Van Bergen's family came from Dutch emigrants who settled in what would later become New York . She was wealthy due to trading and Van Bergens father eventually moved to Paris, where the family lived on the Champs-Élysées . Harry Van Bergen helped found the Hôpital américain de Paris before moving to Shropshire , England . He received British citizenship in 1915 and served as Shropshire High Sheriff in 1924 .
