Hartmann Münch from Münchenstein

Hartmann Münch von Münchenstein (* before 1386; † May 12, 1424 in Muttenz ) was Bishop of Basel from 1418 to 1422 .

Life

Hartmann came from the Basel knight family of the Münch . He was the youngest son of Konrad VIII. Münch von Münchenstein and Katharina von Löwenberg. In 1386 he became provost of St. Peter's Abbey in Basel, and in 1393 provost of Moutier-Grandval . In 1390 he became canon in Basel, in 1400 he became cathedral cantor. In April 1418 he was elected bishop by the Basel cathedral chapter , and was confirmed and consecrated by Pope Martin V on September 2nd. Since Hartmann was already at an advanced age when he took office, he was usually represented in official business by his nephew, the cathedral curator Johann Thuringia Münch, and by Hans von Flachsland. Hartmann resigned on September 24, 1422. After his death he was buried in the Basel Minster .
