Johann von Fleckenstein (* before 1398; † December 20, 1436 ) was Bishop of Basel from 1423 until his death .

Johann came from the Alsatian noble family of the Lords of Fleckenstein . His parents were Heinrich III., The founder of the Dagstuhl line and Agnes von Moers-Saar Werden . Johann was provost of St. Georgenberg near Worms and Benedictine in Selz in 1398, and in 1412 he was abbot of Selz. He was - without election by the cathedral chapter in 1423 Bishop of Basel and on 8 January 1423 by Pope - Martin V. confirmed. Johann confirmed the rights of the city of Basel and tried to regain the bishopric's possessions pledged to Diebold VIII of Neuchâtel . As Diebold resisted, a war began, which Johann was able to end successfully in 1426 thanks to the support of the city of Basel. He managed to regain the pledges of Saint-Ursanne , Muriaux and Chauvilliers , but to do so he had to go into debt with the city of Basel. During Johann's tenure, the Council of Basel was opened in 1431 . After his death he was buried in the Basel Minster .
