Hartmann von der Tann (born October 2, 1566 on the Rockenstuhl , † December 15, 1647 in Heitersheim ) was Grand Prior of the German Order of St. John from 1635 to 1647 .

Life

Hartmann comes from the Eberhard line of the Frankish family of the Lords of the Tann . He was the son of the Würzburg councilor Melchior Anhard von der Thann. His grandfather Eberhard von der Tann introduced the Reformation in 1534 during his rule.

Hartmann became Domicellar of Würzburg in 1575 . In 1583/84 he studied at the Germanikum in Rome and in 1585 in Siena . At the end of this year he moved to Ingolstadt . At his request, the family used their relationships to enable him to move from the cathedral chapter to the Johannitern. The father viewed the financial support for his son as an investment, which he should repay after the expected allocation of newcomers.

In 1587 he gave up his seat in the cathedral chapter in favor of his brother and came to Malta , where he was accepted into the order on August 12, 1587 after participating in the first sea battles. According to reports and letters, he was involved in the naval war of the Johanniter against the Turks for many years . In 1594 he took part in the convent of the order for the German tongue. In 1598 he was governor of the Großbailli. Before 1602 he was given the command of Überlingen and Sulz . In 1607 he was titular Bailli of Brandenburg and in 1609 he was named Prior of Hungary and Commander of Colmar . He had the Commandery of Mechelen between 1613 and 1638 and as Commander of Leuggern he appeared between 1599 and 1609. On May 9, 1635, he succeeded Grand Prior Johann Friedrich Hund von Saulheim as the longest-serving German Knight of St. John . He received the five priorities from Utrecht, Cologne, Heimbach, Freiburg i.Br. and Bubikon. In 1638, during the Thirty Years' War , the Heitersheim dominion was partially devastated by the Swedes and Hartmann fled his residence before them. In the same year Friedrich von Hessen was assigned to him as coadjutor .

Hartmann died in Heitersheim and was buried in the Franciscan church there. Hartmann was the last male descendant of his family branch.
