Hartmut Zühlke

Hartmut Zühlke (born  April 26, 1936 in Marienthron , Neustettin district ; † August 10, 2019 ) was a German biochemist and diabetes researcher . From 1982 to 1992 he was professor of biochemistry at the University of Greifswald and from 1994 to 2001 at the Hannover Medical School .

Life

From 1954 Hartmut Zühlke studied chemistry at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald, where he also received his doctorate in inorganic chemistry in 1965 . He then moved to the Central Institute for Diabetes in Karlsburg near Greifswald , where he set up a department for protein chemistry. In 1974 he was in Greifswald in the field of molecular biology Diabetes Research habilitation , four years later, he was appointed lecturer. He did research stays abroad in 1974/1975 in Chicago and in 1979 at the Hagedorn Research Laboratories in Gentofte .

In 1982 he was appointed full professor for biochemistry at the University of Greifswald, at whose medical faculty he also worked as research director from 1985 to 1990. After the political turnaround in the GDR and reunification , he was initially suspended from duty in 1992 for political reasons, but later acquitted of all allegations and fully rehabilitated. During his suspension he worked, among other things, as a visiting researcher at the Karolinska Institute near Stockholm . Since his professorship in Greifswald had meanwhile been reassigned, Hartmut Zühlke agreed to a corresponding settlement .

In 1994 he became professor of biochemistry at the Hannover Medical School (MHH), at whose institute for physiological chemistry he also set up his own working group. Seven years later he was retired when he turned 65.
