Horst Bibergeil

Horst Bibergeil (born February 3, 1925 in Greifswald ; † June 22, 2013 there ) was a German internist and diabetologist . He acted as a professor of internal medicine at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University of Greifswald and from 1967 to 1990 as director of the Central Institute for Diabetes "Gerhardt Katsch" in Karlsburg near Greifswald.

Life

Horst Bibergeil was born in Greifswald in 1925 and attended elementary school and secondary school in Swinoujscie , where he graduated from high school in 1943. From 1946 he studied medicine at the University of Greifswald . In 1951 he passed his state examination and received his doctorate in the same year. He then worked for three years at district hospitals in Demmin and Malchin and began his training as a specialist in internal medicine . In 1955 he moved to the Institute for Diabetes Research and Treatment in Karlsburg near Greifswald . Three years later he went to the medical clinic of the University of Rostock to continue his specialist training , where he built up the department for endocrinology and metabolic diseases in the following years and qualified as a professor in 1965 . Two years later he became a lecturer in internal medicine in Rostock. After Gerhard Mohnike's death , he moved to the “Gerhardt Katsch” institute for diabetes in Karlsburg, where he assumed the position of director of the institute and, a short time later, a professorship at the University of Greifswald.

Under his leadership the interdisciplinary cooperation and the cooperation between the institute and foreign institutions were strengthened. In 1972 the institute was named the Central Institute for Diabetes "Gerhardt Katsch" and became the lead facility for the treatment of diabetics and research on diabetes mellitus throughout the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Horst Bibergeil published almost 300 scientific publications during his career. His main work was the book Diabetes mellitus , written in collaboration with domestic and foreign experts . A reference work for diabetological practice , of which licensed editions also appeared outside of the GDR. He remained director of the institute until his retirement in 1990. In the same year, in the course of the structural changes in the scientific landscape associated with the reunification of Germany , the dissolution of the institute in its existing form and the transfer to a number of successor institutions began.

Horst Bibergeil was president or chairman of several scientific associations, including the Society for Clinical Medicine of the GDR and the Society for Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases of the GDR. He died in his hometown in 2013.

Awards

Horst Bibergeil has been made an honorary member of several domestic and foreign societies, including the diabetes societies of Hungary and Cuba . The scientific and state awards given to him include the Maxim Zetkin Prize of the German Society for Pediatrics of the GDR, the Fritz Gietzelt Medal and the honorary title of Senior Medical Officer and Honored Doctor of the People .
