Fritz Gietzelt
Fritz Gietzelt (born December 21, 1903 in Frankenberg / Sa. , † May 29, 1968 in Berlin ) was a German doctor and radiologist who worked as director of the X-ray institutes at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin . He made a major contribution to the development of the GDR's National Cancer Register .
Life
Fritz Gietzelt was born in 1903 in Frankenberg / Sa. born and studied medicine in Leipzig , Graz and Düsseldorf from 1925 to 1933 . From 1933 to 1939 he worked as an assistant doctor at the internal clinic of the St. Georg Hospital in Leipzig and received his doctorate during this time in 1935 at the University of Leipzig . He then worked in a private practice for gastric and intestinal diseases in Leipzig until 1944. In June 1944 he was arrested for resisting the Nazi regime and sentenced to death by the People's Court in December of the same year . After being brought to Dresden for the execution of the sentence, he managed to escape there during the air raids on Dresden in February 1945. In July 1945 he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) and a year later of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).
After his return to Leipzig he worked there from 1945 to 1946, initially as a senior physician at the St. Georg Hospital and at the Medical University Clinic in the St. Jakob City Hospital. He then took over, initially on a provisional basis, from 1946 to 1951 as head of the University's X-ray Institute. During this time he received his habilitation in 1950 . He then worked until 1959 as a full professor of radiology and head of the institute for radiology and radiology and as director of the tumor clinic at the Charité , the university clinic of the Berlin Humboldt University . From 1951 to 1962 he was Vice-Rector of the Humboldt University for Research. In addition, he was a member of the Scientific Council for the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy in the GDR. He died in Berlin in 1968 and is buried in the cemetery of the Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichswerder parishes .
Awards and recognition
Fritz Gietzelt, who was largely responsible for the introduction of the National Cancer Register of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), was awarded the honorary title of Honored Doctor of the People in 1950 . He also received the National Prize of the GDR III in 1960 . Class and 1955 the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver and from 1964 was a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . The Fritz Gietzelt Medal awarded by the Coordination Council of the Medical and Scientific Societies of the GDR bore his name in his honor. A special needs school in Leipzig is named after Fritz Gietzelt .
