Harun Parlar (born March 29, 1945 in Üsküdar , Turkey ) is a German-Turkish chemist who researches primarily on photochemistry , environmental chemistry and analysis, and food analysis . From 1994 to March 31, 2012, he headed the "Chair for Chemical-Technical Analysis" at the Technical University of Munich and the Research Center for Brewing and Food Quality. From the beginning of 2009 to March 2012 he was also the managing director of the “Bavarian Research Alliance”.

Life

Parlar studied chemistry at the University of Bonn , where he in 1972 at Friedhelm Korte with the work Photochemical reactions of Chlordanderivate doctorate . He then followed his PhD supervisor Korte to Munich. From 1972 to 1985 he was in charge of the environmental analysis and photochemistry department at the Institute for Ecological Chemistry of the then "Society for Radiation and Environmental Research" (GSF; today Helmholtz Zentrum München ) at the Attaching site .

Here he mainly researched the photochemical reactions of environmental chemicals (focus: so-called cyclodiene pesticides such as chlordane , aldrin and toxaphene ) and developed new concepts for their analysis, which made him known nationally and internationally. During this time he completed his habilitation at the Technical University of Munich.

In 1986 Parlar was offered the chair of analytical chemistry at the University of Kassel , which he held until 1994. From 1990 to 1992 he was Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology at the University of Kassel.

In 1994 he was appointed to the chair for chemical-technical analysis and chemical food technology (location: Weihenstephan ) at the Technical University of Munich as successor to Friedrich Drawert . In mid-2004 Parlar also became head of the new “ Weihenstephan Research Center for Brewing and Food Quality ”. The chair for chemical-technical analysis had several partnerships with companies and specialist societies until it was closed in 2012. Parlar was involved in various university country commissions, so he was head of the research group for environmental protection at universities in the state of Hesse.

Parlar retired on March 31, 2012.

His scientific work is documented in more than 270 original publications and several books; he is also one of the authors of the 1999 Springer Environmental Lexicon and the Handbook of Environmental Chemistry .

In 1987 he received the Certificate of Merit from the International Academy of Environmental Safety, in 1988 the Secotox Award and in 1994 the Varian Award. Parlar is Chief Editor of the Journal of Advances in Food Sciences (AFS) and of the Fresenius Environmental Bulletin (FEB). From 2009 to April 2012 he was Managing Director of the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFor).

Parlar is an elected member of the New York Academy of Sciences and a member of the American Chemical Society . He received the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Medal from the Technical University of Munich and the Elvira Schecklies Prize for his services to cooperation between business and science.
