The Harzfalkenhof (formerly called the Eagle Mountain ) is a bird of prey park located on the outskirts of Bad Sachsa on the southern edge of the Harz Mountains . It is located on the Katzenstein, a foothill of the Ravensberg and is one of the most beautiful falconry farms in the Federal Republic of Germany .

It was created through a private initiative, is privately owned and was built without public support. The Falkenhof was founded in 1964 by Hans Reinecke from Osterwald. Hans Reinecke was a co-founder of the "Order of German Falconers" and served this order for many years as a board member. In 1965, the approximately four hectare site on Katzenstein was opened.

The subsequent owner Joachim Klapproth learned falconry from master falconer Reinecke and took over the Harzfalkenhof in 1984. He is organized in several falconry associations and an honorary member of the Order of German Falconers.

After Mr. Klapproth led the falconry for 36 years, he handed it over to the falconer master Rochus Brotzer, who moved from Switzerland to Germany to run the Harzfalkenhof, together with his business partner Bernadette Steiner.

tasks

The Harzfalkenhof sees its main tasks in protecting birds of prey, breeding birds of prey and falconry. The Falkenhof offers the opportunity for research on birds of prey, especially the functions of birds of prey in the ecosystem, and thus makes a contribution to the conservation of birds of prey and genetic diversity.

It also offers visitors (school classes, kindergartens, etc.) the opportunity for environmental education and experiential education .

particularities

Snow vulture

The birds of the Harz Falconry are usually kept in pairs in species-appropriate aviaries , so that breeding successes are not uncommon. The offspring of the giant snow vultures are unique worldwide .

The Harzfalkenhof also offers sponsorships , with those interested in sponsoring one of the birds for an annual fee .

Flight demonstrations

The flight demonstrations , which take place twice a day in good weather, serve to train the birds in flight and enable them to be kept in a species-appropriate manner, to preserve the natural hunting instinct and, in some cases, to increase the chances of success in reintroduction .

Other activities of the Harzfalkenhof since 2020 have been bird of prey hikes and falconry days.

Birds of prey population

Ferrets are also kept at the facility .

Trivia

On the Katzenstein, on the road to Ravensberg near Bad Sachsa, there is also one of the oldest fairytale parks in Germany, the Märchengrund , which was built in 1910 .
