description
Vegetative characteristics
Lagoecia cuminoides is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 30 centimeters.
The basal and alternate leaves on the stem are simply pinnate. The basal leaves have ovate, serrated pinna. The pinna of the upper leaves of the stem are deeply divided into short, lanceolate lobes with awning at the tip. They are reminiscent of the leaves of the common yarrow ( Achillea millefolium ).
Generative characteristics
The double-gold inflorescence is composed of numerous small bulbs. The small cones are spherical and dense with a diameter of 5 to 15 millimeters. The ten to twelve bracts are heavily pinnate and turned back during flowering. The flowers are hidden between the tightly packed bracts and sepals. The envelope consists of four envelope leaves that are double-pinnate with bristle lobes.
The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold. The sepals are pinnate with bristly tips. The petals are provided with a short, tucked-in lobule, and at the point of bend they have an upright, bristle-shaped horn that extends twice the length of the petal. There is only one stylus.
The fruit is about 2 millimeters long and is covered with short club-shaped hair.
