The Hatzburg is an abandoned Niederungsburg of the type of a tower hill castle (Motte), which was near Wedel ( Pinneberg district in Schleswig-Holstein ) in the marshland on the Geestrand .
history
This castle was built around 1300 by the Counts of Schauenburg . For the first time, the Hatzburg was in 1311 on a document from Count Adolf VI. named by Holstein . With this document dated December 13, 1311, Count Adolf VI promised not to harm the Hamburgers and other merchants from the Hatzburg. Around 1400 the castle was given up as a mansion - this was relocated to Pinneberg - but continued to be used as the administrative seat until 1710, before it fell into disrepair.
Excavations
The State Office for Prehistory and Protohistory of Schleswig-Holstein carried out excavations from 1987 to 1989. The finds and analyzes, including the examination and dating of wood samples, revealed that there was both an older and a younger castle. The older castle was a tower hill castle with probably a wooden tower on an artificially piled earth mound. This tower was demolished later and it was a dungeon built of stones. During the excavations, foundations were uncovered that showed a keep from 1430 and a stone and brick tower from around 1495. The majority of the excavated finds, including Siegburg stoneware , are in the State Archaeological Office in Schleswig. Some finds can be found in the Stadtmuseum Wedel .
today
Only a few flat hills in the landscape give an idea of the former location. On aerial photography that is moth plant recognizable as oval line.
A model based on the findings of the excavations has been set up near the former location on the Hatzburgtwiete.
