Geographical distribution and habitat

The Restocked Sun Owl is found in southern and central Europe , but is absent in Greece . North of the Alps , both indigenous and immigrant individuals can be found in some areas . It is also spread through Asia Minor and across the Caucasus through Central Asia to Korea and Sakhalin . It has also been found in the north of the USA and Canada . The warmth-loving species mainly inhabits semi-arid grasslands, wasteland and heathland areas as well as sunny slopes and embankments.

Way of life

The moths are diurnal and nocturnal, like to visit various flowers in the sunshine and occasionally come to artificial light sources in the evening . They fly in two generations in May and June and in July and August. The caterpillars prefer to feed on the flowers and seeds of many different plants. These include nodding catchfly ( Silene nutans ), meadow sage ( Salvia pratensis ), yellow tooth rust ( Odontites luteus ) as well as various restorers ( Ononis ) and linseed species ( Linum ). The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

The common red owl occurs sporadically in the western and southern German federal states and is classified in category 1 (threatened with extinction) on the red list of endangered species . Most of the information from northern federal states is likely to be immigrants.
