Werner Franz Siebenbrock

Werner Franz Siebenbrock SVD (born September 27, 1937 in Münster ; † December 24, 2019 in Juiz de Fora , Brazil) was a German clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Governador Valadares .

Life

Werner Siebenbrock grew up in Mecklenbeck and attended the Ratsgymnasium in Münster. After his military service he joined the religious order of the Steyler Missionaries in 1958 . He studied at the St. Gabriel Mission House in Maria Enzersdorf near Vienna and at the Philosophical-Theological College SVD St. Augustin in Sankt Augustin . He made his profession on May 1, 1965, and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1965 . In 1966 he went on a mission to Brazil, first to Rio de Janeiro , where he worked as a pastor in Rio de Janeiro, then in Minas Gerais . In 1987 the Steyler missionaries of the Brazilian Northern Province elected him their Provincial.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Belo Horizonte and titular bishop of Tacia Montana on October 12, 1988 . The Archbishop of Belo Horizonte, Serafím Fernandes de Araújo , gave him episcopal ordination on December 18 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Luciano Pedro Mendes de Almeida SJ , Archbishop of Mariana , and Romeu Brigenti , Auxiliary Bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . His episcopal motto was "In Verbo autem Tuo" (On your word ( Lk 5.5  EU )).

On November 9, 1994 he was appointed Bishop of Nova Iguaçu . On December 19, 2001, he was appointed Bishop of Governador Valadares by John Paul II .

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on March 6, 2014. He last lived in the religious convent in Paineiras, Juiz de Fora .

Honors

Werner Siebenbrock was an honorary citizen of the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte and Governador Valadares.
