A control center (control center, control room) of an energy supply company or a distribution or transmission network operator is referred to as a switching line (in the case of a regionally higher-level function, a group switching line , in the case of a system-managing function, the main switching line) .

The switching line monitors and controls a power network in the medium to high voltage range with the help of a network control system . Here, at least historically, switching operations in switchgear and transformer stations are of particular importance. Technical employees on duty can intervene in processes via remote control or monitor them via remote data transmission .

Control centers (control rooms ) have similar functions, e.g. B. in power plants or large industrial plants.

Range of tasks

The main tasks include the operational management of the electrical transmission and distribution network. In addition, the avoidance of consumer shutdowns is one of the main tasks.

In addition, the control management is responsible for various other tasks. This includes the rapid stabilization of the grid regime after disruptions and rebuilding of the supply. It is also responsible for ensuring the scheduled, if necessary operational, decommissioning of electrical equipment for the implementation of maintenance and repair measures. It monitors the high-quality frequency and voltage maintenance and ensures that transmission losses are minimized . In addition, the switching line is responsible for controlling the short-circuit currents in the event of a fault and for ensuring earth-fault compensation . Finally, the monitoring of the setting values of network protection devices and automatic switchover falls within their range of tasks.

Many of the areas that are organized in switching lines are part of the system services .
