The Hauptstätter road is part of the national highway 14 in the center of Stuttgart . It runs from Bad Cannstatt to the northeast through the city center and on to Marienplatz in the south district . The B 14 then continues towards Vaihingen on the Fildern . Alongside the B 27, the street forms one of the two central traffic axes through the basin , which cross at Charlottenplatz . Hauptstätter Strasse forms part of the Stuttgart City Ring and connects the city districts of Stuttgart-Mitte and -Süd. To the north, the street, starting at Charlottenplatz, continues through Konrad-Adenauer-Strasse , Willy-Brandt-Strasse, Am Neckartor and Cannstatter Strasse. The term “ city motorway ” is often used to refer to the inner-city streets from Wilhelmsplatz to Neckartor, for example .

The name Hauptstätter Straße suggests that it derives from the word capital , in fact the term Hauptstatt is used. The street follows the original route to the municipal execution site , which was located in front of the Hauptstätter Tor on today's Wilhelmsplatz. People were beheaded there until this place of execution was moved to the Feuerbacher Heide in 1811 . Even today, the so-called “executioner's festival” takes place on Wilhelmsplatz, which commemorates past events as a Hocketse culture .

Since the end of the renovation work for the Stuttgart trams in mid-1972, Hauptstätter Strasse has been used entirely for road traffic, and all trams have been underground since then. For this purpose, the remains of the old city wall made of red sandstone (near Torstrasse) were removed. Those who drive on the B 14 / Hauptstätter Straße from the Heslacher Tunnel do not drive continuously above ground, but pass under the intersecting streets at Österreichischer Platz and Wilhelmsplatz and in the continuation at Charlottenplatz and Schillerstraße. The last-mentioned traffic junction between the Wagenburg tunnel and the main train station on Konrad-Adenauer- / Willy-Brandt-Straße was given the name Gebhard-Müller-Platz .

One of the largest urban development projects in Stuttgart is the planned capping of the B 14 in the area of the City Ring. In spring 2006 the first part of the project between Charlottenplatz and Wilhelmspalais was implemented.
