The house at Hauptstrasse 40 (formerly known as the “Zum Herzog von Wellington” inn) is a listed building, which is located in the city center of the district town of Bergheim in the Rhein-Erft district .

Building history and use

A house that immediately catches the eye of the visitor due to its magnificent facade is house no. 40 in the district town of Bergheim , which was built at the end of the 18th century. In 1799 the Jewish doctor Emanuel Levi lived in this house with his family. After the family moved from Bergheim, the property was converted into an inn . It is said to have initially been called "Hotel Stadt Paris". In the spring of 1815 the English Duke of Wellington , the victor over Napoleon , is said to have come here.

Since that event, the inn has been named "To the Duke of Wellington". The neighboring house on the Erft was temporarily connected to the inn . In it, the owner of the house "Zum Herzog von Wellington" maintained spacious stables for horses, a coach house and a spacious dance hall. The vet and later mayor of Bergheim, Gottfried Füssenich, bought the inn. In 1848 at the latest it can be traced here in Bergheim. His son Karl Adolf Füssenich was the first historian of the city of Bergheim.
