The oldest house in Bergheim

The house at Hauptstraße 106 in Bergheim was built in the 16th century and is therefore the oldest still existing residential building in the district town of Bergheim.

The oldest house in town

The late Gothic house was probably built at the beginning of the 16th century and survived Bergheim's destruction in 1542. The two recessed extensions are more recent. The building is made of brick and has yellow plasterwork . The facade is structured below the stepped and curved gable by staggered panels. An arrow slit can be seen on both sides .

When digging the construction pit for the new construction of the neighboring house, it was found that the building was originally surrounded by a moat. The reinforcement of the house with loopholes and moats indicates that the house was part of the city fortifications.

From the 18th century until today the house has been used in different ways. In 1799 the baker Reiner Brockes lived here. In the 1911 address book, the driver Jakob Heikamp is listed as a resident of the house. In 1919 the brothers Bernhard and Josef Bittner, who previously lived in Bergheimerdorf, bought the building. The master painter Josef Bittner used the house not only as an apartment, but also for his painter's workshop, the sign next to the front door still indicates the year it was founded in 1909. The son Herbert Bittner continued the painting business.
