Hauptstrasse 98 (Bergheim)

The house at Hauptstrasse 98 in Bergheim was built in the 17th century. In the first half of the 20th century, the building was used as a boarding school for foreign students from a boys 'school, which is why the building is also known as the boys' boarding school .

Building history and architecture

House No. 98 is a two-storey plastered building of seven axes with a mansard roof . Above the old entrance door there is an alliance coat of arms from the 2nd half of the 17th century, which represents the coat of arms of the Frentz and Vettweiß families, who built the house. Johann Roland Frentz was a councilor in Nideggen and a notary in Düsseldorf who married Maria Magdalena Vettweiß in 1675, who came from a Nideggen council family, which is why the house must have been built after 1675. The couple died in 1737.

According to the French population list for 1799, the couple's grandson, the Bergheim notary Johann Anton Servatius Frentz, lived in this house. After him, his son Gottfried Anton, born in 1774, lived there, who was also a notary in Bergheim and was mayor from 1800 to 1815. and died in 1847, his wife Theresia Ostlender did not die until 1859. After that, the house passed into the possession of the Schauw family and was sold by them in 1907 to Heinrich Schunck, the rector of the boys' school. Schunck rebuilt the house and set up a boys' boarding school in the building for his foreign students, as it was used until 1939. After that the house belonged to Dr. Aloys Mertens, who married Heinrich Schunck's niece.
