The house on the main street No. 71 in Bergheim

The house on Hauptstrasse No. 71 (also called "The House of Revolutionaries") is a listed building from the 13th century and is located in the city center of the district town of Bergheim in the Rhein-Erft district.

Building history and architecture

The earliest development on property no. 71 dates back to the 13th century. At that time there was a residential tower made of timber frame technology , which was surrounded by a moat , in today's courtyard . It could have belonged to a castle man serving at Bergheim Castle. This half-timbered building was destroyed by fire. It is believed that this happened in 1239 when Bergheim was conquered by the Archbishop of Cologne. In the 16th century, a house with a narrow front facing the street was built on the site of today's house. It was destroyed after 1550 and stood empty for a long time. The still-preserved building was erected on the remains of this building at the beginning of the 17th century. By using the remaining walls, the window frames and the chimney, a building was created with a broad front to the street. The two-story brick building has side stepped gables. Originally, the entrance was via a stair tower in the courtyard that connected the floors. In the 18th century, however, this was replaced by a front door facing the street. The wrought iron figurehead shows a lion and is decorated with tendrils. It did not originally belong to the pharmacy, but was acquired by Claus Schüller in Munich in the 1920s and installed here.

Todays use

In 1836, Dr. Heinrich Harff founded the pharmacy, which he named "Löwenapotheke". Since then, the pharmacy has changed hands several times until it passed to the Schüller family in 1927. In 1957 the pharmacy was moved to Kölner Straße 4. In 1986 Hans Klaus Schüller sold the house at Hauptstrasse 71. It currently serves as a bistro called “Best”.
