Hauptstrasse 8

Hauptstraße 8 is a listed residential building in the Rhineland-Palatinate municipality of Schopp . The building was erected in 1768 in the late baroque style.

location

The house is located in the center of the village diagonally across from the village's primary school, which is also listed. To the north there is an inn of a similar size on the main road, and to the west below that there is another residential building. Both houses were built in the 19th century by builders from the Jacob family.

history

The builder of the house was the timber merchant Joh. Nicolaus Jacob. His ancestors came to Schopp from Switzerland and rebuilt the place, which had been desolate for fifty years after the Thirty Years War . The sons of the client, including the later deputy Joh. Nicolaus Jacob , left the village and went to Kaiserslautern . Her descendants include the district councilor Carl Jacob , the politician Karl Theodor Jacob , the medical philosopher Wolfgang Jacob and the Romanist Daniel Jacob . The property in Schopp was taken over by the nephew Adam Jacob. He is the grandfather of the Palatinate cookbook author Emmy Braun (Luise Lichtenberger) and built the gatehouse in 1788.

Later, and still in the 1960s, the house was used as the “Deutsches Haus” inn, until it was extensively renovated and converted into living space before 2000. The local pharmacy is located in the gatehouse .
