Emmy Braun , married Luise Jacob , née Luise Lichtenberger (born May 25, 1826 in Zweibrücken , † April 4, 1904 there ) was a German cookbook author. Along with Anna Bergner (1800–1882), she is the most famous cookbook author in the Palatinate . Her New Palatinate cookbook for middle-class and fine cuisine was the best-selling book in the Palatinate with eleven editions at the turn of the 20th century. It was only surpassed by Der Pälzisch Weltgeschicht by the author Paul Münch . In America, too, many households from Palatinate emigrants cooked afterwards. The many copies that are still available today in antiquarian or online auctions show that the books were used extensively and annotated. Many families passed their New Cookbook on from generation to generation.

Life

Ida Luise's father was Carl Philipp Lichtenberger, a businessman from Zweibrücken, who, together with his cousin Philipp Marcus Lichtenberger from the Rheinschanze (since 1843 Ludwigshafen ), was very committed to building the first Palatinate railway connection . The poet Oskar von Redwitz (1823-1891) dedicated the chapter Louise in the bay room to her, his youthful crush, in his autobiographical novel Herman Stark, German Life (1868).

In 1845 she married the doctor Franz Carl Jacob (1818–1895) a second cousin . The couple had two sons and two daughters in Kaiserslautern . In 1865 Jacob was appointed to the " Landrath der Pfalz " and was immediately elected secretary. From 1873 to 1882 he was the president of this district parliament.

During the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871 , Luise Jacob and her daughters took care of wounded and sick soldiers in the hospital .

The Jacobs began to write during a multi-year spa stay in Cannstatt . Far better known than his extensive scientific treatises, was the only work of his wife, who became the most successful Palatinate cookbook author under the pseudonym "Emmy Braun". They said it was sold as many times as the Bible.

Luise Jacob was also known for her embroidery, which was shown and awarded at the 1893 World Exhibition in Chicago and art exhibitions.

The tombstones of their grandparents Adam Jacob and Elisabeth geb. Scherer are under monument protection.

Honors

Cross of Merit for Women and Virgins (Prussia)

During her lifetime she was awarded the war memorial for non-combatants , the Bavarian Cross of Merit and the Prussian Cross of Merit for women and virgins . Her handicrafts were also awarded medals and certificates of honor.

In the Zweibrücken district of Oberauerbach , Emmy-Braun-Strasse was named after the author.
