Karl Theodor Jacob

Karl Theodor Jacob (born January 15, 1908 in Kaiserslautern , † July 19, 1980 in Ramsau near Berchtesgaden ) was a German politician of the CSU . He was district administrator of the former districts of Lohr am Main and Berchtesgaden and the first president of the Bayerische Landesbank .

The official

Jacob, a lawyer and the son of a prison director, was first a member of the government council at the Bad Reichenhall district administration and was then appointed by the respective district government, first to the district administrator of the Lohr am Main district and in May 1944 to the district administrator , in accordance with the rules adopted from the Kingdom and the Weimar Republic appointed for the district of Berchtesgaden .

Handover of Berchtesgaden without a fight

Since his appointment as district administrator in Berchtesgaden and the foreseeable occupation by the Allies, Jacob tried to prevent senseless, life-threatening defensive actions. He also fought off the outsourcing of the armaments industry to the region and instead had hospitals relocated to the district. However, he was unable to prevent the relocation of further Wehrmacht posts to the district. His greatest fear, namely that the Führer headquarters could be relocated to the Führer's restricted area on Obersalzberg , became irrelevant shortly before the end of the war due to the targeted attack by the Royal Air Force on Obersalzberg on April 25, 1945. The SS left Obersalzberg, and the large number of senior staff officers represented in the district also withdrew towards Pinzgau . Locally, however, remained the later condemned as a war criminal NSDAP - district leader Bernhard Stredele , who continued to call for choosing defensive battles in Berchtesgaden. The intended arrest of Jacob failed because Jacob's father-in-law was accidentally captured in his apartment instead of Jacobs. On May 4, 1945, Jacob had a leaflet printed calling on the population not to resist the occupation . On the same day he handed over the southern part of the district to the American troops on the road between Hallthurm and Berchtesgaden. The legal trainee and later District Administrator Rudolf Müller served as interpreter . He was then confirmed in office by the American military government , but replaced by Wilhelm Walter in July 1945 on their orders. Ernst Mendrzyk and Leopold Schmitt followed in quick succession. Schmitt was later confirmed in office by the newly installed district council . On April 25, 1948, the district council, elected democratically by the population for the first time, reappointed Jacob as district administrator. Following this four-year term of office, he was confirmed in his office two more times, each time for a six-year cycle, by the district citizens with a voting share of over 95 percent, which he held until 1964.

Berchtesgaden post-war district administrator

Jacob sought after the war to revive the regional handicrafts. So he revived the "Bauernkunstgenossenschaft" founded in 1924 with seat in the carving school as Berchtesgadener Handwerkskunst , which since then has been responsible for the distribution of Berchtesgadener War as an independent enterprise of the district . In the case of suitable buildings in Berchtesgaden from the time of National Socialism , he campaigned for their tourist use. He prevented the planned demolition of the Kehlsteinhaus and pushed ahead with the completion of Roßfeldhöhenringstraße and the sale of the Berchtesgaden hotel properties formerly used by the National Socialists to Steigenberger . He later persuaded the Free State of Bavaria to transfer the usufruct of the Kehlsteinhaus to the non-profit Berchtesgaden State Foundation.

Activity in municipal banking

After his work as district administrator, he was president of Bayerische Gemeindebank Girozentrale from 1969, and from 1972 to 1976 first president of Bayerische Landesbank.

He died during the funeral of the industrialist Willy Schlieker at the Ramsau mountain cemetery.

Honors

Jacob was made an honorary citizen of the Berchtesgaden market in June 1945, but was revoked again in April 1946. On April 26, 1955, it was finally awarded to him for good. In 1962 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit and in 1978 the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany.

family

Jacob was married and had a son and two daughters. His grandfather was Johann Wilhelm Jacob , member of the state parliament .
