House Nehlen is in Berwicke , a district of the municipality of Welver in the district of Soest . It was originally a moated castle . In the 17th century, the complex was converted into a castle in the Lipper Renaissance style .

history

House Nehlen was first mentioned in a document in 1268. The castle probably served to protect the northern border of the County of Rüdenberg . It was initially the ancestral seat of the von Nehlen family (also Nele, Neylen, Nelen or Neilen). The estate came into the possession of a branch of the von Plettenberg family in 1350 .

The builder of the complex, which still exists today, was the cathedral provost in Paderborn and Münster Dietrich von Plettenberg (1550–1634). He had it built for his nephew Wolter Heinrich von Plettenberg. The executing architect was the Dortmund stone sculptor Dietrich Gerlinckhaus.

Since the end of the 17th century, Haus Nehlen was owned by the von Boeselager family . In the 1770s, the family moved their headquarters to Höllinghofen Castle . Since then, Haus Nehlen has been managed by tenants and administrators. In 1977 ownership was passed to a farmer who still manages the land around Haus Nehlen today.

Today a family lives in the left half of the house and the sculptor Egbert Broerken lives and works in the Renaissance moated castle.

investment

The complex with outer bailey and core bailey is on two islands. The buildings were partly built on oak stakes. Beyond this by moats surrounding nuclear installation, there is another Gräftenring, inside which farm buildings and stables are located.

The main building is two-story with a high hipped roof . There is also a three-storey corner pavilion and a stair tower in the middle of the main front. The entrance in the tower is richly decorated with architectural decorations and coats of arms. A stone staircase leads to the knight's hall , which has a magnificent fireplace.

House Nehlen was extensively renovated from December 2011 to spring 2013. I.a. the roof structure was partially renewed, the roof was newly covered with slate, weathered stones in the masonry were replaced, and window sills were renewed.
