Berwicke is a district of the municipality of Welver in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Berwicke is located between the cities of Soest and Hamm on the direct connection road and belongs to the large community of Welver in the Soest district. The place is characterized by agriculture and the village community. The Soestbach crosses Berwicke from south to north. In 1993 Berwicke celebrated its 800th anniversary. 291 people live in Berwicke (as of 2010).

On July 1, 1969, Berwicke was incorporated into Welver.

For several years now, many farmers in Berwicke have only been working part-time in order to continue the family tradition. Most have taken other jobs because a small farm doesn't make enough money. There is only one farmer left in Berwicke who does his job full-time. In contrast, the number of individual businesses in this village has increased. For example, two riding schools were opened within four years.

The moated castle Haus Nehlen is located in the village .

Name and first mention

Berwicke was first mentioned as Berewich between 1193 and 1205 . The place name means something like : fenced dwelling near pear trees , whereby “barley” or “woody wood” are also conceivable as the meaning of the first word component.
