The place is mentioned in 1298 as Holthausen ("decimam suam sitam Endike et Holthesen") and around 1338 as Einecker Holthausen in the Schwefe parish ("Endiker Holthusen in parochia Sueve"). The place name means houses in the forest near Einecke .
