Flerke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flerke is a part of the municipality of Welver in the district of Soest . It is located in the southwest part of the parish. The district, first mentioned in a document in 1220, was an independent municipality until the municipal reorganization and was assigned to the municipality of Welver on July 1, 1969. Flerke probably got its name from the Middle High German terms Vled for lilac and rike for rich (for example, "Fliederreich") or vlat and fläke for beauty, cleanliness and delicacy. A derivation from the Westphalian fläge for handsome, well fed is also possible. Since 1950 the population of Flerke has increased significantly. It rose from 250 people back then to over 500 people today, primarily due to the designation of new development areas.

There are several clubs in Flerke. The Flerke gymnastics club is particularly well-known and has almost twice as many members as the district's residents. TV Flerke dance groups have qualified for German championships in guard and show dance several times in the past. The Flerke children's shooting club is the oldest club in the town and has been organizing the annual children's shooting festival for well over 100 years. There is also a local fire brigade of the Welver volunteer fire brigade, a quartet club, a homeland club and a marching band.
