House Lexicon

A house encyclopedia is a reference work that takes into account the needs of daily life; the house lexicon is a special form of the technical lexicon .

Examples of general home dictionaries

The first known reference work of this kind is Das Hauslexikon published by Gustav Theodor Fechner from 1834–1838 . Complete handbook of practical life skills for all classes .

In 1900 Frieda Müller published the "Haus-Lexikon - A book for everyone - 1700 practical tips" . The book, published by the specialist book publisher Kroisbach in Graz, is obviously aimed at women. It covers topics such as girls' professions, women's rights and professions , servant duties, etiquette and nutrition .

The Stauffacher Hauslexikon , published in 1955, shows how high the demands were in some cases . The subtitle announced that the knowledge of mankind would be summarized in a volume with 50,000 keywords.

In 1969, the Stuttgart Füllhon-Verlag (later Füllhorn Sachbuch-Verlag) published a lexicon with the title House Lexicon from AZ and the subtitle Source of Knowledge . An author or editor of the one-volume lexicon with 30,000 keywords, 1822 photos and illustrations and 18 multi-colored maps is not specified. The peculiarity of a lexicon for the practical areas of life does not seem to be given here, as the keywords encompass all areas of knowledge.

Examples of more specific topics

Health issues were a popular topic in home dictionaries. In 1872 the Kummer Verlag published the “House Lexicon of Health Education for Body and Soul. A family book. ” By Hermann Klencke in 2 volumes.

The 1909 work by the physician Emil Singer is treated under the title “Das Doktorbuch. Medical House lexicon physical culture and hygiene " issues such as the medicine cabinet , infant and nursing , contraception and masturbation .

In 1914 another medical house dictionary by the doctor K. Döbereiner was published with the title "Medical house dictionary of human diseases and the means to be used against them. With special consideration of the tried and tested folk and home remedies presented to all families in an easily understandable way.

With the well-known Knaurs practical house encyclopedia began a series of house encyclopedias, which deal with activities of handicrafts , handicrafts , DIY and cooking . It was published in Munich in 1984 for the German Book Association.
