Hermann Klencke

Philipp Friedrich Hermann Klencke ( pseudonyms : Hermann v. Maltitz and E. v. Kalenberg ; born January 16, 1813 in Hanover , † October 11, 1881 ibid) was a German military doctor , private scholar and popular science writer .

Life

Klencke attended high school in Hanover and then the medical-surgical school there. He became a military doctor in Minden and, with General Doctor Adolph Leopold Richter, published the medical weekly military paper , with which they initiated a fundamental reform of the military medical system in the Kingdom of Prussia .

In 1837 Klencke turned to Leipzig, where he studied medicine and natural sciences at the University of Leipzig . In 1839 he established himself as a general practitioner in Braunschweig . There he also attracted attention through his scientific lectures and was politically and journalistically committed to the revolution of 1848/49. His popular biography Alexander von Humboldt , first published in 1852, enjoyed several editions.

In 1855 he went back to his hometown Hanover. There he led a secluded life devoted to science and publication.

Klencke was awarded the title " Professor " at an early stage . He was a member of several academies of science.

Honors

In 1841 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Publications (selection)

The oeuvre of Klencke included more than 200 volumes. In addition to scientific literature, he also published popular scientific literature as well as numerous socially critical, cultural-historical and biographical novels. It may not be surprising that he has been accused of plagiarism .

Two of his works have been awarded prizes:

  • The liver thrush as a remedy , 1842.
  • Investigations into the spoilage of teeth , publishing house of the Association for Medicine in Prussia, 1847 and 1850.
