Haxhi Lleshi (born October 19, 1913 , † January 1, 1998 ) was an Albanian partisan and politician ( PdAA ).

partisan

Lleshi was one of the main commanders in Albania's struggle against the Germans and the Italians during World War II . He is still considered a hero by some Albanians because of his actions in the war. When a communist, anti-fascist government was established in Albania in 1944, Lleshi became Minister of the Interior and held this post until 1946.

Politician

On August 1, 1953, Lleshi became chairman of the Bureau of the Citizens' Legislature. He was one of the most influential citizens in the communist regime of Albania alongside Enver Hoxha and Mehmet Shehu , although he was often viewed as the puppet of Hoxha, who was in fact the dictator of Albania. During the time of Lheshi's power, Albania became known as one of the most independent communist nations because it initially warred with the Soviet Union , then became an ally of China and then also warred with China.

He was also one of 154 people who were awarded the title "Hero of the People" ( Hero i Popullit ).

Lleshi lost his position as chairman of the Bureau of the Citizens' Legislature after nearly 30 years in office on November 22, 1982 when Hoxha reshuffled the government. Three years later, Hoxha died and the communist regime fell during the early 1990s, but Lleshi continued to live in Albania.

Investigations

In 1996, Lleshi was tried and found guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity committed while in the communist regime of Albania.

The indictment came in 1996 together with Manush Myftiu , former President of the Aranit Cela Supreme Court , former Attorney General Rapi Mino and Zylyftar Ramizi , a former Deputy Interior Minister. It was about involvement in crimes against humanity by the Central Deportation and Deportation Commission, chaired by Myftiu and to which the co-defendants belonged. The death penalty imposed by a court was softened by the Supreme Court in a decision of July 24, 1996 as follows: Ramizi received a life sentence , Cela 25 years and Mina five years, while Leshi and Myftiu received one due to their age and health Bail were released from custody.
