The USCGC (United States Coast Guard Cutter) Healy is an American research vessel designed as an icebreaker . She entered service in 1999 and is one of the US Coast Guard's two active icebreakers alongside the USCGC Polar Star .
history
The Healy , named after Michael A. Healy , is 128 meters long and has a diesel-electric drive with a maximum drive power of the engines of 22,000 kW. It was built by Avondale Industries in New Orleans built and in 1999 by the United States Coast Guard commissioned. The scientific community was involved in the development and construction of Healy and made a valuable contribution to equipping the ship with laboratories and technical equipment in general. It was designed to enable a wide range of research. There are over 390 m² of laboratory space available for this purpose. The Healy has numerous electronic sensors, oceanographic equipment and quarters for 50 scientists. The ship can break ice about 1.5 m thick at a constant speed of 3 kts and operate at temperatures as low as −36 ° C (−50 ° F). Her maximum speed is 17 knots , the cruising speed is 12 knots.
