Hector Hughes

Hector Hughes ( 1887 - June 23, 1970 ) was a British politician and member of the House of Commons .

Political career

In the general election of 1935 , Labor politician George Garro-Jones succeeded in asserting himself against the incumbent candidate of the Conservative Party in Aberdeen North . After he had represented the constituency in the lower house for over ten years, he did not stand in the following general election in 1945 . Six candidates applied for his successor, of which Hector Hughes was ultimately able to prevail. Hughes, the candidate of the electricians' union, prevailed in the decisive vote with only one vote against JE Harper , who had already run unsuccessfully in the constituency of Montrose Burgh in 1935 . Hughes won the mandate well ahead of the conservative candidate Lady Grant of Monymusk , with 69.7% of the vote .

The expectations placed in Hughes as a potential candidate for a ministerial post to succeed William Wedgwood Benn , who represented Aberdeen North in the 1920s, could not be fulfilled, just like his predecessor. Nevertheless, he was able to defend his mandate in the following general election in 1950 , 1951 , 1955 , 1959 , 1964 and 1966 with a share of the vote of over 60%. Despite his old age, it took convincing that Hughes did not run for another term in the 1970 general election . He was succeeded by Robert Hughes , who should represent the constituency until 1997. Hector Hughes passed away five days after the elections.
