Hedley Bull
Hedley Bull (born October 6, 1932 in Sydney , Australia , † May 18, 1985 in Oxford , United Kingdom ) was an Australian political scientist . He was the founder of the English School in International Relations .
Life
Bull graduated from Sydney University with a master's degree in history and philosophy in 1953 before moving to England to study political science at the University of Oxford . In 1955 he went to the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) as an assistant . From 1957, Bull held a scholarship for various international organizations. In 1962 he returned to the LSE as a university lecturer ( reader ). From 1965 he worked as director for arms control and disarmament at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and from 1967 for ten years as professor of the political science discipline international relations at the Australian National University in Canberra . From 1977 until his death he was Professor of International Relations at Oxford. In 1984 he became a member ( fellow ) of the British Academy .
According to Bull's view (and the English School he founded ), the international state system is not only characterized by anarchy , but also by common interests that would lead to the development of an “anarchical society” equipped with common institutions .
Bull coined, among other things, the term domestic analogy , with the help of which international relations can be interpreted.
