Hedwig-Alice Lotter-Schmidt
Hedwig-Alice Lotter-Schmidt (born February 23, 1876 in Galați , Romania , † May 23, 1955 in Bern ) was a Swiss journalist and writer .
life and work
Hedwig-Alice Lotter-Schmidt was born as the daughter of a businessman in Galatz, German name for Galați, and grew up in Aarau from 1880 on. After finishing school, she studied at the University of Neuchâtel and at a young age married the chemist Moritz Lotter, who held a director's position in Milan and later founded his own business in Zurich . When he died, Hedwig-Alice Lotter-Schmidt became a widow at the age of 27 and, since her parents also died early, had to look after her two sons and daughter alone.
After Hedwig-Alice Lotter-Schmidt had worked for a while at the Zürcher Kreditanstalt, she moved to Bern with her children and started working as one of the first journalists in Switzerland.
Hedwig-Alice Lotter-Schmidt wrote newspaper articles about the old town of Bern and contemporary local events. In the area of daily reporting, thanks to her social interest, reporting from the courtroom was particularly important to her. The articles appeared in Der Bund , Berner Tagblatt and Emmentaler Blatt . In Bern, she was elected the first female trade inspector in the Canton of Bern and served as a lecturer in the Federal Prosecutor's Office during the Second World War .
During and after the two world wars, Hedwig-Alice Lotter-Schmidt organized aid for refugees and displaced persons and received the order of the Hungarian Red Cross for this. After the First World War, she published her travelogue In boycotted Hungary (1920). She published this under her mother's maiden name, Correvon.
She also wrote the book Gespenstergeschichten aus Bern (1920), Book of Housekeeping (1934), Life and Work of Women in Switzerland (1944), and translated the book A Swiss in the Foreign Legion by Léon Randin, illustrated by Hans Eggimann .
