Heiko Fenn

Heinz-Konrad Fenn (born July 20, 1918 in Kiel ; † March 17, 2016 in Bonn ) was a former flotilla admiral . D. of the German Navy , musician , composer and head of the Bonn Shanty Choir.

Life

Fenn became interested in music from an early age and first learned the instruments harmonica and accordion , and at the age of eight he also learned the violin . As a teenager he led a music group. After graduating from high school in 1937, he entered the Navy as a candidate for naval officer . After the beginning of the war, he became the commander of the submarine U 445 as first lieutenant at sea . Fenn was taken prisoner by the British. While in captivity, he founded a dance orchestra used to care for prisoners. He studied music until 1947. The big band he directed continued for a while after the war, but broke up for financial reasons.

In 1956 he joined the German Navy as an officer, and in 1978 he was retired as a flotilla admiral. He wrote a songbook that is still used by shanty choirs today. After his active service, he arranged pieces for the Bundeswehr Big Band . Since 1992 he has led the Bonn Shanty Choir, composed, arranged and wrote the lyrics.
