Vale do Peso is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Crato with 258 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Vale do Peso and Flor da Rosa merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Crato e Mártires, Flor da Rosa e Vale do Peso .
history
Finds prove a prehistoric settlement. A bridge has been preserved from Roman times. Nothing specific is known about the place from the time up to the end of the Portuguese Reconquista . The present village was probably repopulated after 1230 , when King D.Sancho II gave the area to the Hospitaller Order. The current community was in 15./16. Century created.
During the Restoration War in the 17th century and especially during the Napoleonic invasions at the beginning of the 19th century, the place suffered heavy damage. In March 1811 French troops camped here on their retreat.
Culture and sights
In addition to a large number of stone fountains, simple and stately historic houses, the Roman bridge and the train station building, various archaeological excavation sites are also listed. The also listed parish church Igreja Paroquial de Vale do Peso (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz ) from the 15th / 16th centuries. Century was extensively remodeled in 1660.
economy
The community is dominated by agriculture. Livestock and forestry, the production of cork and olive oil , and the cultivation of vegetables and cereals, especially rye, are the main economic sectors of the municipality. Construction is another factor in the local economy, along with some trade and administration. The Portuguese Post Office CTT Correios de Portugal has a branch here.
traffic
Vale do Peso was a stopping point on the Ramal de Cáceres railway line until the CP railway company ceased passenger services on the line in 2011.
The place is not far from the national road N245, which leads 7 km south to the district town of Crato and 10 km north to the IP2 (here also European road E 802) near Alpalhão .
The municipal administration offers a free shuttle bus to the district town of Crato on Fridays .
