Monte da Pedra is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Crato with 280 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
A bridge from Roman times has been preserved. Nothing is known about a place located here from the eras up to the end of the Portuguese Reconquista in the 13th century. The current town was probably built after 1230 as part of the settlement policy under King D.Sancho II , who gave the area to the Hospitaller Order. The present municipality became independent in the 17th century after previously belonging to the municipality of Aldeia da Mata .
The medicinal properties of the water that springs here have been known since 1810 . A spa was established here in the 1920s .
Culture and sights
In addition to the Roman bridge, a watermill, some sacred buildings and the Fonte do Chamiço fountain are listed as historical monuments. The Termas Fadagosa thermal baths , better known as Estância termal do Monte da Pedra (English: thermal baths of Monte da Pedra), are also registered as a monument.
