Aldeia da Mata is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Crato with 374 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
A number of megalithic systems prove a prehistoric settlement. The Romans also settled here, as u. a. the excavations of fortifications and a Roman cemetery from the 3rd century BC Prove.
Nothing specific is known about the place from the time up to the end of the Portuguese Reconquista . The present village was probably repopulated after 1230 , when King D.Sancho II gave the area to the Hospitaller Order. Aldeia da Mata has existed as an independent municipality since the 17th century.
Culture and sights
In addition to a large number of sacred buildings , stone fountains, historic houses and bridges, the Anta do Tapadão and the Anta dos Penedos de São Miguel , in particular, are under monument protection, two about 5,000 year old tombs (Portuguese Antas ).
