Flor da Rosa is a place and a former municipality ( Freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( Concelho ) of Crato with 254 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

The former monastery (now Pousada)

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Flor da Rosa and Vale do Peso were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Crato e Mártires, Flor da Rosa e Vale do Peso .

geography

The place is located in the lowlands of the upper Alentejo , about 25 km west of the district capital Portalegre and 3 km north of the district town of Crato.

history

The medieval fountain

The village emerged as part of the settlement policy under King D.Sancho II after the conclusion of the Portuguese Reconquista in the 13th century. D.Sancho II gave the area to the Hospitaller Order in 1232 , who took their Portuguese seat in nearby Crato in 1340 . In 1356 the place became the seat of a monastery founded by Álvaro Gonçalves Pereira, father of the canonized knight Nuno Álvares Pereira . Today's place developed from this.

Culture and sights

A number of historical public buildings and houses, a fountain from the 14th century, the parish church and the monastery, which has existed since 1356, are among the monuments of the community.

With the monument to Nuno Álvares Pereira, the place commemorates the knight who may have been born in the local monastery.

The historic town center is also a listed building as a whole.
