Healing refers to the process of establishing or restoring physical and mental integrity from an ailment or illness , or overcoming an impairment or injury through recovery . While the concept of healing is etymologically determined by becoming whole (see the expression " salvation "), recovered (from the Greek neomai ) originally referred to being out of danger.

Classical healing terms of antiquity such as Greek θεραπεία "service, healing", Latin curatio , sanatio , salvatio , restitutio ad integrum or English healing (e.g. by first intention , second intention ) always resonate with today's definition.

Healing in today's sense encompasses physical, psychological and social aspects ( biopsychosocial medicine ) of the person.

Healing in medicine

In medicine, healing is defined as the restoration of health by the body reaching the initial state ( restitutio ad integrum ). If there is any residual organic or functional damage, it is called defect healing .

Healing in Psychotherapy

In psychotherapy , the term healing is equated with restoring mental health. Its definition varies, however, depending on the theory as everyday functionality, problem solving, strength of the positive inner experience, etc. Psychopathology also names limitations in some clinical pictures such as B. Psychoses , where residuals are defined as "leftover residual restrictions" in mental health.

In addition, in psychotherapy, the concept of healing is closely interwoven with the level of the psyche (personality and behavioral structure), whereas spiritual traditions (see also healing work ) focus on the concept of the soul .

In the sociological or socio-psychological sense, however, healing also means that the former patient / client sees himself in a position to organize his life again himself or to take it into his own hands. He is no longer dependent on those who did his healing. He is no longer dependent on them and has recently been able to organize his own life.

Healing in religion

Biblical understanding

In the Old Testament , the prophet Isaiah proclaimed that the Messiah would take on the sin, sickness and pain of others, and through his wounds they would receive peace and healing (Isaiah 53: 5).

The New Testament sees this fulfilled through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christ himself produced many healing miracles. The commission of healing (on behalf of Jesus according to Mt 10,8; Lk 9,1 + 2) and the anointing of the sick (according to Jak 5,13-18) are used in addition to the Catholic, Old Catholic and Orthodox Churches and others. a. practiced in the Pentecostal movement . Healing in the New Testament is closely connected with faith, as it is expressed in the phrase "your faith has helped you" (e.g. Mt 9:22; Mk 10:52; Lk 17:19).

Denominational understandings

The visiting the sick is next to the feeding of the hungry and clothing the naked of the seven works of mercy counted and according to Catholic Church law, it is necessary for canonization that miraculous healings were performed by this man.

Buddhism

Healing also plays an important role in non-Christian world religions. In early Buddhism there was the idea that a person who agrees with the truth and speaks it can bring about healing of illnesses: If “a person who is authentic in this sense speaks a truth he has experienced as such, he is able to heal himself and others or to produce other extraordinary effects. "

Healing in Bahaitum

The writing of Bahaitums assumes that man lives on three different levels, which must be considered and developed: the material level, the human / social level, including the intellectual and spiritual level. Illness arises from imbalances either on a level or between them. However, the human soul is never affected by diseases. This multicausal interdependence of diseases also requires a complex approach. Illness is not a sign of divine punishment, and no conclusion can be drawn from the state of health as to the spiritual potential of man.

The Baha'i are asked to consult a competent doctor if they are ill , even if they should be a doctor themselves. A competent doctor is a person who has studied a scientific system of medicine and who enjoys the trust of patients in it .

The healing of humans requires not only material but also support through spiritual means, i.e. prayers . The Baha'i scriptures contain numerous healing prayers to be said by the sick person or his relatives. Visiting the sick is part of the duty of every Baha'i.
