Holy Spirit Chapel

The Heilig-Geist-Kapelle in Angermünde is a 15th century chapel . The brick Gothic chapel is the only remaining building of the former Heilig-Geist-Spital which was destroyed in the Thirty Years War.

Building history

The single-nave chapel consists of three bays which are dated to the 14th or 15th century. The chapel belonged to the Heilig-Geist-Spital, founded in 1336, which was located directly outside the former city wall of Angermünde. The church interior initially had a flat ceiling, but it was not until the 15th century that the vaulted yokes were added later. In this context, the portal was moved from the north side of the chapel to the west side.

The baroque tower lantern was added in 1775. For this purpose, a half-timbered tower stump was built behind the west gable, so that the tower sits like a roof turret directly behind the gable. The interior of the chapel was redesigned in the classical style in 1841 with a pulpit altar and the organ on the west gallery , which was built in 1749 . The organ is a work by Christian Friedrich Leopold Morgenstern from 1841 with six stops on a manual and pedal , which was restored by Karl Gerbig after 1945 .

local community

In 1698 the chapel was built by Elector Friedrich III. left to the French Reformed community . The chapel is still used for worship by the French Reformed parish Groß Ziethen / Schwedt (Oder) , which belongs to the Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .
