The Holy Cross Church is a Roman Catholic church in the district Hochkreuz of Bonn city district Bad Godesberg . The church at Cheruskerstraße 11–15 is used by the Catholic parish of St. Andreas and Evergislus and thus belongs to the Archdiocese of Cologne .

history

The church was built in 1964. The community was founded as early as 1957 and consisted primarily of newcomers who had come to the city as part of the expansion of Bonn as the seat of government. The church was consecrated on March 28, 1965 .

The parish home and a kindergarten were built later. The name of the church refers to a historical cross of the same name built nearby from the middle of the 14th century (there is now a replica , the original is in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn ). Use of the parish center was given up in 2005. At the beginning of the 2010s, the building was demolished and the subarea was rebuilt by a private investor. A two-storey residential quarter with 16 residential units was created here, with the church tower on the west side.

architecture

The design of the ensemble came from the architects Stefan Leuer and Willi Zachert . The nave has a rectangular plan and is made of red brick. The central entrance (east) with its double wing door and opposite a semicircular apse (west) are located on the broad, symmetrically designed gable ends . The gable roof is drawn down on the sides. An iron ridge cross stands above the entrance gable . The interior is divided into three parts by two rows of pillars. In the south is the baptistery, in the north the sacristy . The ceiling is paneled with wood . As a structural expression of a newly founded congregation, the building of the church is considered significant for the history of the government district of Bonn .

Furnishing

The interior of the nave was made by Sepp Hürten and Paul Magar . It contains an altar cross from the 18th century and an unmounted and undated Pietà . The organ comes from Johannes Klais Orgelbau (Opus 1473) and was installed in 1972.

Steeple

The bell tower, built separately in 1967, has six floors and a flat gable roof .

The bells hung in 1984 consist of five bells cast by the Mabilon bell foundry in the medium- weight rib design : Cassius + Florentius (1320 mm, 1457 kg), Michael (1160 mm, 1006 kg), Maria (980 mm, 578 kg) , Gereon Ursula (870 mm, 406 kg) and Johannes Petrus Paulus (710 mm, 235 kg).
