The statue of St. Nepomuk in Arad is a statue of John Nepomuk from the Baroque period . It is the oldest monument in the city and is located at the intersection of Strada Episcopiei and the corner of Strada Desseanu .

history

John of Nepomuk was a Bohemian priest and martyr . He was in 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII. canonized. The statue was donated shortly after the canonization of the Brotherhood of St. Nepomuk in memory of the extinction of the plague (1708–1729) in Arad. Saint Nepomuk was considered the patron saint of the Banat including the Arad district. Today the original from 1729 is in the Minorite Church . The statue on display is a copy by the Arad artist Mihai Takács .

The memorial was made in a Viennese studio by an unknown sculptor. The statue is made of sandstone and was first located on the banks of the Marosch . Saint Nepomuk was regarded as the patron saint of waters and as a bridge saint who protected against floods. In 1780 the monument was moved to its current location. The statue depicts St. Nepomuk as a canon with a short beard and a crucifix in his arm.
