Heinrich Arnz

Heinrich Gottfried August Hubertus Arnz (born February 3, 1785 in Düsseldorf ; † June 11, 1854 there ) was a German printer , publisher and editor .

Life

On February 21, 1813, he married Maria Catharina Carolina Drach (1794-1870). The marriage gave birth to nine children: August (1813–1846, publisher), Catharina Louise Josephine (1817–1891, wife of the painter Eugene von Guerard ), Carl (* 1821, manager), Otto (landscape painter), Marie (* 1825, wife of the painter Joseph Fay ), Friedrich (* 1826, brother-in-law of the painter Philipp Schmitz ), Julie (1827–1896, wife of the painter Oswald Achenbach ), Marie Anna Fernandine (* 1829, wife of the painter Albert Flamm ) and Albert (landscape painter).

With his brother Joseph and the music dealer Johann Christian Winckelmann (1766-1845) is Arnz teamed up in 1815 to 1 October 1816 Dusseldorf the company Arnz & Winckelmann as lithographic institute , publishing house and printing office to start. The company initially established itself as a printing company for forms, school books (atlases) and picture sheets and rose to become one of the leading art publishers in German-speaking countries. After the co-partner Winckelmann left in 1828 and his brother Josef died in 1841, the sons Carl and Otto entered the publishing business. The son August took over a branch in Leiden , the Netherlands, in 1840 . Arnz was a member of the Exchange Association of German Booksellers in Leipzig .

Arnz took an active part in the art life of the city of Düsseldorf. Not only through his sons and sons-in-law he belonged to the environment of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , he was also involved in business with it, as he printed and laid out and sold their products. Furthermore, since the founding year 1829 he was one of the important supporters of the art association for the Rhineland and Westphalia . In 1850 he had himself portrayed by the prominent German-American painter Emanuel Leutze . The portrait is now in the possession of the City Museum of the State Capital Düsseldorf .
