Heinrich Bleiker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Bleiker (born July 19, 1884 in Wattwil ; † January 19, 1975 in Brunnadern SG ; legal resident in Wattwil) was a naive painter from Switzerland.

life and work

Heinrich Bleiker grew up in an orphanage after the early death of his parents. He became a milker and worked for this profession in Friesland for a few years . In 1915 he returned to Wattwil with his wife. After a serious accident at work, he had to quit his job at the age of 73.

As early as the early 1930s, Bleiker occasionally painted alpine elevators on the walls of farmhouses. His main work was created after his retirement. He was inspired by postcards and calendar pictures. His pictures mainly show genre and traditional scenes, but also biblical scenes and landscapes. "The works impress with their carefree boldness in terms of form, which allows extreme changes of perspective, right up to a film-like sequence of different scenes."

In 1969 Bleiker took part in the “I naïfs” exhibition in Lugano . Today he is considered one of the classics of naive art in Switzerland. A group of works by him from the collection of Mina and Josef John acquired in 2014 is in the museum in the warehouse in St. Gallen .
