Life
Conried attended secondary school in Vienna , first tried his hand at acting and made it to an engagement at the Vienna Burgtheater (1873/74), to which he owes important contacts. He later emigrated to the USA and was active in the then thriving German-speaking theater scene in the country. From 1892 to 1903 he directed the prestigious Irving Place Theater in New York, to which he also engaged many Viennese actors, such as Adolf von Sonnenthal , Friedrich Mitterwurzer and Lina Loos . As director of the "Met", Conried brought out Enrico Caruso and Gustav Mahler , among others . The first scenic Parsifal production outside Bayreuth , created under his direction, against the declared will of Cosima Wagner , became legendary .
His illegitimate son Heinrich Franzke, born on December 20, 1878 in Hamburg, comes from the relationship with the dancer Martha Franzke, who was born in Breslau on September 12, 1857.
